You look on autotrader and see low milage used GT-R's for sale and it makes you wonder why? Transmission? Boredom? Trying to make quick buck? I love mine. Just curious?

Id have to say most likely its in this order:
1) Financial Burden or Boredom with an Automatic car 2) Fear of high maintenance costs and warranty being declined. 2) Trying to make a quick buck (those days are pretty much done with) The GTR has always been a great car around the world.. Nissan really dropped the ball on it though this time around.. They made a great car, but it seems all they cared about was 0-60 numbers and Ring times.. They forgot that these cars were going into the hands of "average Joe" consumers and made the car way to delicate. I think because of this most people get the car expecting it to be as cool as the R33-34 and then just get disappointed and sell the car. -------------------- Sirius/(((XM)))

I haven't heard anyone disappointed with the car, but I am considering selling. I just got it (105 miles) and love it. The only reason is I have a deposit on an R8 V10 which should be arriving in 2010 (approx. 14 months from now). It's either sell it now for a decent amount or after 14 months of depreciation.

XMMAN, you make some great points; these are also the very considerations of an informed would be buyer. Excellent comments. |

Now with all of these warranty concerns and high maintenance costs, the mark-up days are close to being gone, imo, so it's not worth the risk to me. (Not to offend anyone, of course.) As a GT-R owner, the KEY REASON I would consider selling the car (which I probably will in the next 4-6 months), are:
1. Impractical (for my use). 2. I've had my fun, now on to something new. This post has been edited by lindros2: Nov 1 2008, 08:39 AM |

Personally I still think the main reason you see these cars for sale is the flipping for a profit factor - there is still money to be made in exporting them as I understand and people are still hoping to make a buck reselling it domestically.
Then there are those that just like switching cars a lot, use them then sell before putting on miles high enough to impact the resale (and this goes for dealers too, the owner/manager will drive new cars and then put it for sale before the miles get too high). Also include parts dev companies in this group too sometimes, just keep the car long enough to make mods for it. There are other factors of course too, but IMHO the majority of people who recently popped for the car were prepared financially, were aware of the potential maintenance costs (and if afraid of that expense would probably sell just before major stuff due as you see with other high cost to maint cars). Those that are afraid of issues (or warranty coverage because they want to LC it a lot) don't nec buy such a car new to the market to keep it long in the first place. |

I'm probably selling mine in the next few days because of outrageous maintenance costs to keep the car in warantee. Problem is i have a letter from nissan explaining to me what is covered under warantee when i use the car for circuit driving, it is the most contradictory collection of statements i've ever seen. I will type it up and post here on the forum over the next few days. I love the car but the fear of being left high and dry despite pouring money into the vehicle leaves me with a bad taste. thx. |

i know the "automatic" tranny (we all know it isnt), is the reason alot of people are "bored" with the car... the rest must be the tranny issues...

i love my GT-R, just wish the black was a little easier to maintain. i'd say the number one reason is probably financial related....not surprisingly, sales of porsches (there was an article online about the one in greenwich ct seeing a 40-60% decline in sales recently) and other luxury cars have plummeted in the past few months due to the economy. the GT-R is a good value when compared to other supercars, but the truth of the matter is that it is still an expensive car for most americans.

You'll have to pry mine from my cold, dead hands! I'm there, you couldn't get me to sell mine. Works great as a daily driver, a little tricky now that I have lowered it but still perfectly useable. Weekend drives in the canyons and mountains are sublime and after getting it on the track I can easily see years of fun use from this car. I think the majority of those selling the car are those who saw profit motive immediately or who looked at it as an investment and are trying to get out before they loose their "capital". Of course there is the other group, those who just do this, buy cars try them and sell them. They may have a GT-R today, they may have a GT3 tomorrow, they may have an R8 next month. It's what they do. Nothing wrong with this, you got the money to burn, have fun, life is short. Funny thing is, those that constantly change cars I rarely see ever finding out what these cars are capable of. They are just looking for the next big thing. The new "wow" factor. That's cool, the neighbors are I am sure, very impressed. It's impossible for me to imagine anyone who has driven the GT-R, I mean really driven it, not being utterly impressed with it. |

Nitealb,
I would love to see that letter, why not just scan it... or take a picture and upload it. Thanks. We love the car, though the maintenance is high it does not seem that much higher than a Porsche. Plan on keeping it for the foreseeable future. |

I'm in this camp. I usually get bored after 1/2 year to a year and buy something else. There are many of my clients that are also like me. In fact I am considering joining a couple of them who have bought several high end cars together and they just drive a different one every week or so. One of them owns a warehouse where they are stored. I know that there are commercial car club with fractional ownership but this is better. The group that I am talking about has a 2005 Ferrari 430 and 2003 360 Spider; 2007 Porsche Turbo, 2008 BMW M3 Cab, 2007 Austin Martin DB9, Range Rover and a couple of others. I was supposed to supply the GT-R for the group. I figure switching cars is a hell of a lot cheaper than switching wives. This post has been edited by Canuckfx: Nov 1 2008, 03:09 PM |
