Let me give you the play-by-play...

Unfortunately, Mother Nature didn't give us the lower temps we were hoping for. The forecast had originally called for lows of around 57 but when we first got to the track at 6PM it was still around 74 (boooooooo!). By the end of the night it was in the high 60s. But very humid (typical Florida weather) which isn't great for drag racing. (We can't wait for a major coldfront!)

* Just a quick note: We are still trying to dial in our set-up. It's very hard to do at the track itself. We really need to spend all day at a dyno but haven't had the chance.

First Pass (no LC): 11.15 - car felt decent but not ideal; it has definitely run better.

Second Pass (no LC): 11.38 - and the car started acting up a bit. A few sputters before redline. We then reflashed the ECU with a custom tune map we had John Cobb create for us. (We were running a less aggressive map in the first 2 runs.)

Third Pass (no LC): 10.998@ 129.72 - *BINGO* We finally broke into the 10s!

Pulling up to that tower to get the timeslip (and not knowing what I ran) and seeing that "10.998" is a feeling I will never forget. We went through so much "agony and defeat" trying and trying to get into the 10s that it was a fantastic feeling to get that monkey off our backs finally. When I pulled back around to the staging lanes everyone on our 'team' (Chuck_H, Eddie my mechanic, and several other friends) were all high-fiving like we had just won the Super Bowl! :-) Even the announcer (who knew a few weeks back that we were trying to be the first GT-R into the 10s) announced, "I believe we just saw the first GT-R in the world run 10s!" and the crowd went wild and people applauded. Unfortunately, they don't read NAGTROC. ;-) It was a nice gesture anyway.

Here's the time slip...

Then we got GREEDY and decided to run "Map B" (19psi) on the HKS boost controller. (We had been running "Map A" which is 17psi.)

Fourth Pass (no LC): 11.35 - it seems running more boost threw off the timing of our custom Cobb map. So we switched back to running 17psi.

It was getting late in the night and we knew we only had one, maybe two, passes left. And I'll admit it, I'M VERY COMPETITIVE. The guys at Animal House Racing set the bar with their recent 10.88 run and I really wanted to beat it. Our trapspeeds weren't anywhere near theirs yet (133) and I knew our only chance was with Launch Control.

So I turned to Chuck and said, "The pressure is off us now, we've already run 10s like we've been dying to do for weeks. I'm ready to try with LC. If it breaks, it breaks. We're probably going to have to upgrade the tranny at some point anyway." Chuck didn't hesitate, "Then go for it!"

Fifth Pass (LC): 11.05 - with a 1.66 60ft!!! DOH! I redlined coming out of 1st into 2nd (it happened so fast coming out of the hole!) and then I shifted too early into 3rd.

I am kicking myself because all night (and for weeks) we've been running 1.9-2.0 60ft times. And here I rip off a 1.66 and blow it.

I pull around (at 9:55PM with 5 minutes til closing) and am happy to see they will let us stage for one last run.

I am determined to make this a great run!

Sixth Pass (LC): 10.852@128.86 - with a 1.61 60ft (my personal best)!!!!

AND HERE'S THE KICKER...

I redlined the top of 2nd before I could get into 3rd! It would have easily been a 10.7 (maybe high 10.6) run! DOH!

* Anyone who says "the GT-R just drives itself, it's easy!" hasn't tried dragging the car a lot. It takes a bit of skill to nail it right before the redline every time; especially when we're talking tenths of a second.

Eddie could tell I redlined and told me later that he said, "Well, there goes that run." So we were all SHOCKED to see the 10.852.

Here's the time slip...

We still have a LONNNNNG way to go with fine-tuning the car. There's still A LOT MORE we can get out of it. That "trial by fire" stuff at the track at the moment isn't ideal but we've done the best we had to work with.

Here's The Current Setup:

HS GT570 Kit - Boost set to 17psi
Amuse STTI Exhaust (Catback)
Harman Motive Air Intake System
Custom Methanol Injection
Custom Cobb Map (Thanks John!)
18" Volk TE37s w/Mickey Thompson drag radials
Fuel: Mix of 93 and 109. I added a few gallons of 109 to just under a 1/3 tank of 93.
* Side Note: This car has a chromoly rollcage that probably adds 80-90lbs to the car's weight.

A big thanks to Eddie, Chuck_H, Ricky, and a bunch of other friends that came out in support! It's really awesome to have a group of people all supporting you and rooting you on. Definitely makes it a lot more fun!

Special thanks to Eddie for doing all the work on the car, to John Cobb for help with the custom map (which we still need to keep fine-tuning), and to Mike @ GT-RR for getting us most of the parts.

We've got a couple of different videos of the 10.852 run - I am told one of them (probably the best shot from directly behind the run) will be uploaded tomorrow by our buddies from Titan Motorsports that were also rooting us on. The other video I have in a new little camera next to me -- I just have to figure out how to get it off the built-in memory card thing.

EDIT: I see Wes from Titan just posted below (username "onelove") and he said he'll try to get the video up by tomorrow or Monday at the latest. Thanks Wes!)

Thanks to everyone for their support! Really appreciate it.

Here's one video of the run... (Not best quality)

Yes, nice job John. Can't wait to see the video of this one. Congratulations! Like GTM stated, you know it was the extra hp gained from that authentic Amuse exhaust that pushed it past the 11sec block. smile.gif

Great to see the pass in person John, it's definitely got a lot more in it that's for sure.

I'll try and get the HD video up tomorrow for you if I can make it into the office. If not it'll be up first thing Monday!

Just read the edit. Damn, you know how fast it happens with those gear changes. I constantly find myself loosing time missing the shifts because the car is already so fast even with just an exhaust. I can't even imagine how fast yours gets there. Well, I guess, soon enough, I won't have to imagine anymore. smile.gif

Great write up and a deep and sincere congratulations again. I know it was a lot of work to get there. Just think, you already know due to the miss shift you are faster. smile.gif

Get a midpipe, no cats in place as I didn't see this on your list. It's going to be loud as all hell, but with a custom tune by Cobb for that setup, you will see more. From there, you can have a street tune with cats in place, and a track tune with no cats. That is, assuming you still drive this beast on the street. smile.gif

"What we love about the GT-R is that it refuses to compromise where it really matters. It's not pretty. It's not comfy. It's not trying to make friends and influence people. It's not out to change the world.

It exists for one reason and one reason only-to kick holy ass. And kick ass it does. You don't have to like it. You just have to stay the hell out of its way."
