Three days ago I set out on a mission with a friend of mine. He has a GT-R that had a y-pipe and nothing else. He is not a forum kind of guy and lays low...he asked me to do some research and find him a solution to wanting more power. Knowing that one day I will be going down the modding path, I decided to go through the process thoroughly. He wanted more power than stock but wanted to retain DAILY DRIVING characteristics and have the option to be "basically stock" when going to the dealer. With that in mind, we took his car out and did some initial testing a few nights ago using a GPS based device called the V-box. This is the same box that car magazines use in many of their tests.

7/1/09, 9 pm Houston time, 90 degrees outside - GT-R with Y-pipe:
0-60 was 3.5
0-100 was 8.3
1/4 mile was 11.82@119.8
60-130 was 10.69 seconds

7/2/09, 9 pm Houston time, 90 degrees outside - GT-R with Y-pipe and stage 1 COBB:

A phone call into my good friend Dusty Womack of www.mvpgtr.com and the next day my buddy had a COBB Accessport. We loaded the stage 1 map and...

0-60 was 3.2
0-100 was 7.4
1/4 mile was 11.43@122.8
60-130 was 9.82 seconds

He was happy with the pick-up...all of us Houston fold use the 60-130 measure to guage real world performance pick-up as there is no launch involved and that range truly measures the capability of a street car. After those runs he said, "man, just a little bit more, and I'd be perfectly content". At that point in time I had spoken to several tuners and several companies that offered the e-tune product and the ONE that came to mind that I felt would be what my buddy was looking for was SHARIF at FORGED PERFORMANCE. He took my calls over the past week or so and took the time to answer my questions, return my calls, etc... He treated me like a customer even though I had purchased nothing from him. I called him up, my buddy purchased his custom e-tune and we uploaded it tonight. Results as follows:

7/3/09, 9 pm Houston time, 90 degrees outside - GT-R with Y-pipe and Forged Performance Custom E-Tune:
0-60 was 3.08
0-100 was 6.98
1/4 mile was 11.18@126.7
60-130 was 8.72 seconds

You draw your own conclusions but man, for relatively small $ you can start creeping into ZR1 territory... His car pulls nicely now and he's happy with the results. Thanks to Dusty as always for hooking my buddy up with the COBB and thanks to Sharif for the great customer service, SWEET e-tune and for taking all my questions/calls even before I was a customer.

Peter

Thanks for the info. I have a 2009 EDM, Y-pipe and Cobb stage 1.

What does LC2 mean? Is that the lower 3000rpm launch that can be done with VDC on?

We've had some issues getting EDM cars to launch properly; could someone enlighten us as to the best way, i.e. how hard do you have to be on the brake and how quickly do you need to floor the throttle?

Which Y pipe was used in the original GTR being tested?

Does it drone?

How is the loudness vs stock midpipe/exhaust?

David - yes, LC2 is the second version of launch control that you can use with VDC ON or VDC R...about 2,800 rpm. The cars I've seen, you simply hit the brake (not that hard) and floorboard the throttle and voila, 2,800 rpm.

Autox - it's the BoostLogic y-pipe, I got it (as did my friend) from www.mvpgtr.com There is NO drone, both cars run the stock exhaust.

Ben - thanks! smile.gif

Peter--
Nice writeup and great results. I assume your car is next once you break her in????

BTW, can you give us a little history of the time you spent going back and forth with Sharif
on the custom e-tune and the process involved.

Thanks,

Ryan

3.0 second 0-60? Wow, this is a really neat thread. First time anyone has put out ECU tunes through the V-Box. Lots of interesting data, and very eye opening.
Glad your friend is happy with the car! smile.gif

actually if you press The brake 100% & stomp on The gas you'll find The car will rev to 3k rpm, sometimes 3200rpm.

Nice writeup Peter, impressive results from some simple mods. Be cool to see more doing some parts comparisons like this.

Will have to setup a v-box group buy on the site. smile.gif

Thanks for the data. I have similar mods myself with addition of an HKS Legamax catback. It's nice to see real world documentation of the performance improvement with data above just dyno results.

Nice results, well presented, thanks.

What octane and what sort of boost curve?

Lue - thanks bud! smile.gif

Ryan - the process was simple...I told Ryan what fuel is being used (93) and the mods on the car (y-pipe) and he called my buddy, my buddy paid, Sharif emailed the file to him and we uploaded it, DONE. It was painless.

jimmyp - no bud, not SW's car, his black car (now owned by Ray Hoffman) is now in CA at SP Engineering getting some work done. smile.gif

Sharif - very happy indeed! The 0-60 time is nuts, I drove it and it felt insane! smile.gif

haveboost - nice, need to try that sometime!

Chuck - thanks bud, the Driftbox is a must have for any car nut...it does EVERYTHING from acceleration, handling, track lap timing, etc...

DMG - thanks!

REK - agreed, I am more interested in what is going on on the street and in real world conditions...dyno is GREAT, and I am all for it, but no replacement for real world performance.

thistle - straight outta the pump 93 octane......as for boost curve, that would be a Sharif question...

Peter

Thats a great and detailed comparison. I am surprised how much Sharif picked up on the custom tune.

How much Boost is this setup running?
