The GOTO:Racing GT-R competed in its first official sanctioned event today, and it finished the day in style. My brother Chris took the car out in a Time Trials group and in two laps beat the overall TT record for Thunderhill. I was racing the car in Super Unlimited, my only real competition was a 700ish HP Mustang AIX car running 335 Hoosiers all the way around. I missed pole by about .6 seconds, although my qual session was in heavy traffic and I was confident that I could go sub 1:49 in the heat of the afternoon on clear track.

As soon as the green flag dropped and the Mustang blew me away and beat me clean into turn 1 I thought I had a problem. Luckily with a lot of close passes in traffic and the great brakes of the GTR I was able to keep him in site and waited for him to make a mistake. I made one pass that did not stick when the Mustang gapped me by 10 car lengths on the front straight, but made another pass (two wheels in the dirt which the crew was not exactly happy about) in turn 7 and was able to gap him enough in traffic to take home first place.

The biggest fear for the race was if the AWD warning light would come on and my race would be over. Luckily I was able to pass him at about lap 8, then let up my pace considerably to keep the wheels from spinning and setting off the AWD alarm. Our tranny temps held stable about about 280 degress beating the p*ss out of the car in 100 degree weather. We were pretty happy with this since our temps never really leveled out before. I had never run more than about 8 laps at a time so it was nice to see the car complete a 25 minute race.

We have video from the day encoding right now and hopefully will have it up late tonight or tomorrow morning. This race was the most fun I have had in a racecar in a long time. Racing wheel to wheel and the speeds of the GTR is just a rush, I can't wait for World Challenge!

Awesome work GOTO guys smile.gif
You dont need to worry about the 280F transmission temps either as your Willall Racing WR35TM Transmission Fluid is totally stable at that temperature and simply wont oxidate at this level even over a season of use. Time to push a bit harder! smile.gif

Congrats on the first win. Not bad for shaking out the car, with fairly low boost levels. smile.gif

Well it looks like the video will have to wait until we get home tonight because the wi-fi at the track kinda sucks :(.

We are also unfortunately done for the weekend. Do to the weight of the car, and the track temps this weekend; our tires are not having the happiest time. We blistered the last of our spares during the race yesterday. We are also working closely with Michael @ MBS to get our brake pad balance right. After abusing the brakes on every corner, practically standing on the pedal, we used up our front brakes. Until I get some cooling on the front rotors, and get our rear brakes doing more of the work, I don't want to burn up another set of pads. We will take all of our data from the weekend and be hard at work next week preparing the car for NASA Nationals.

Look for the video first thing tomorrow morning, the crew watched it a couple of times last night and we still can't get over the closing speeds this car has on the rest of the field.

GOTO:Racing would like to give a special thanks to Michael @ MBS for coming out to the event and taking data for the brakes. You can feel good knowing that he has been doing his homework on these pads.

Congrats guys on the race win! Good luck with getting the brakes ducted as a 25 minute race is not long to lose your front brakes. I still think you will need an Alcon kit, or perhaps the new Stillen brake package to go 24 hours without changing rotors and pads every 2 hours as the stock calipers are the issue. The front brakes are always going to be doing 75% of your stopping unless you set the rears up with larger calipers, rotors, and brake bias which will get the car tail happy under braking. How badly were the tires blistered? Will they hold up with your GT-R full of fuel for the full stint?? Did you guys log fuel economy during the race? 5mpg or worse? The tune could help with the economy, running a little leaner, adjusting timing, lowering boost, and cutting power to help run a little longer on your gas. Obviously you guys are working on pulling more weight out of the car which will help with the temps, brakes and tires. Post up the video when you can!! You guys always have the best threads on this site cheers.gif

Silver,

Can you please clarify this for us? I don't see where they say they "lost" the brakes, nor how much total time is on them, nor how the rotors look. Do you have this info? How did they win such a battle of a race if they "lost" the brakes? Exactly how is the caliper affecting the pads and disc, and how do you adjust the bias, other than Mu, when everything is so heavily controlled electronically?

Also, exactly how long does an Alcon kit and new Stillen kit go at Thunder Hill on discs and on pads without cooling? Was this data from a similar car and what pads were you using? Thanks in advance for the info and sharing your data!

Ditto! smile.gif

We never "lost" the brakes. In fact, what I said was that I was practically standing on the peddle in the multiple hard braking zones at T-Hill without any fade the entire race. The pads were amazingly consitent but then after the race we noticed they had worn more than we expected, therefore coming to the conclusion that we need to try to keep them cooler with some ducting. We still have no data to support replacing the stock calipers.

We did not log fuel mileage because we are not going to use the stock AP stage 2 tune again.

Tires is another situation that we are not sure how we are going to fix right now. We obviously realize that taking weight out of the car will help, but to my disappointment, money it seems does NOT grow on trees.

I hope some more sponsors step up and help out once they see how well ur doing. Its going to get a lot of attention and sponsors will benefit but the eco is a bit hard these days.

I read from GOTO Racings post: "we used up our front brakes"...What does that mean exactly? The front brakes pads were toast after 25 minutes....without ducting, and with a heavier car than they plan on running at the 24 hour event. Nissan used 6 sets of Calipers, rotors and pads for their 24 hour run with ducting. Weight will be the key, but from the sounds of things the tires look like a much bigger concern over 24 hours. I have seen an Evo VIII tested at T-Hill and Infineon back to back with Brembo calipers and stock rotors, Brembo calipers and upgraded Alcon rotors, and Alcon Calipers and Alcon Rotors with an Evo VIII. The difference was staggering to say the least in stopping distances, fade, wear and temps with the full Alcon kit. I have not seen the results of the Alcon or Stillen package ($14,000!!) as yet, but based on the difference the Alcon kit made on the Evo, I would expect a huge improvement over the stock street Brembo package as well for the GT-R. I hope a big sponsor steps up to the plate to help this effort out. I think this car is a World Challenge GT contender almost as you guys have it right now, and it would be great to see it against the Vette's, Vipers and GT3's! All the best for the events you have lined up for this year, and I look forward to seeing your video when you post it up.

Brian,

It's always a pleasure working with you and the entire GOTO racing team. That was an awesome drive!

For interested parties, the pads had approximately 3.5 hours of total time on them, which includes the 25 minute race. I think everyone here knows their setup, Slicks and no brake cooling.

. . . . and get our rear brakes doing more of the work . . .

Congrats on the track record!

If you're interested in an aero component to help with rear braking force, PM me about a dynamic wing. They automatically provide maximum downforce under braking, giving the rear tires a lot more traction to work with.
