Thought this would be fun... let's suppose you have enough to buy a GTR and just cannot get one for whatever reason. What would you buy instead (assuming you have 60-90K to buy any other car)?
For me, I think I'd go old school with one of these... 1973 Super Duty Trans Am (only I'd try to find one in Brewster Green).
Why? Well, price is right... a show car is $100K+, but you can find a nice driver in the 85-90K range (arguably what you will be paying for a GTR

). If you "step down" to a '74 SD, the price drops another 10-15K because they made more of them. Speaking of that, they only made 252 SDs in '73 and how many do think are still around today? 50%? 60%? And, of course, this car will do nothing by appreciate whereas virtually all new cars depreciate.

Nothing. I am not just out to spend money because it is there, I am out to buy a GTR. If it really happened and I couldn't buy a GTR, the money would stay in the bank.
Oh, sorry, fun topic. Hmm, lets see, I've always liked the 69 Camaro, why not.

There are many cars that could be a substitute for the GTR. If they (dealers) are going to make the price match a TT and make it impossible to get one, then I would buy the TT. Other cars that I would evaluate would be the Rossion Q1 95k, Lotus Exige 70k (I already own the Elise) or other cars in that vein. I want the GTR because I could get more use from it than the Rossion or Lotus but if I have to pay as much as the Porsche, I would buy the Porsche. The ownership issues won’t be an issue since I can get it serviced anywhere. Oil changes aren’t a problem, I don’t have to get special diff fluid and I have a proven product. I’ve owned and raced Porsches in the past but I was lured away by the Japanese bang for the buck. More than likely I will hold onto my Lotus and wait to see what happens with the GTR. I really want the GTR but I don’t want it at all costs.

Well if you need a sensible family car then the new 572hp Audi RS6 may even see off the GTR from 60 onwards...

Aonther £15K though.

I think I'm with you... if it weren't the SD T/A, then for something more contemporary, I'd go after a Rossion or used Noble M400. Love those cars!

You can't touch a '71 Hemi Cuda for under $100K so that doesn't qualify. Maybe one with a different motor or a non-'71.

M3, or maybe CSL? CSL might be too harsh for a weekend driver.
I think the GT-R will be under control by this time, but if not, that's what I'm looking at.
Z06 is too singular-purpose and high profile - though my father would appreciate me getting one. 911T is too expensive, but a great tourer. Very possibly a used one for around $90k some day.

I agree that there is no substitute for the GTR but if I am unable to obtain one because of the dealers I might go with the new BMW M3 or a M5. They are in the same price range and provide a good amount of power and fun, plus they are good daily drivers.

Otherwise it'll be a E90 M3 (yes the sedan) with EDC and M-DCT, or possibly the new CTS-V. I'd prefer a 4-door since I want something more practical than the Z06, but I'll make an exception for the GT-R

Unfortunately there is no substitute.
If the prices are still way outta whack by spring 2009 then maybe an M5. I've always loved the GT40 so maybe a Ford GT. The prices are coming down on those. Or maybe an R32 and just spend the money on rebuilding the car from ground up.

I'll most likely get the 335i if the GTR's MSRP turns out to be a joke. The 335i IMO is elegant, refined, balanced, effective, and practical.
Elegant due to its simplicity. RWD, relatively light weight, not too loud looking.
Refined because its a BMW that hasn't been F'd up like the E92 M3 IMO. The steering is well weighted and precise.
Balanced since it has near 50/50 weight distribution and handling is superb.
Effective due to its dual tubos delivering plenty of low end torque. That translates to immediate accelleration when you need it 90% of the time..at low speeds.
Practical due to its relatively low price point as well as generous rear seating room.
The GTR is at least an order in magnitude more extreme in every respect except practicality (rear seats are almost useless). Specifically, the GTR's looks, and performance are out of this world. With markups, so will the price.
Nissan perplexes with this GTR. If they can produce such performance, why then didn't they obliterate the 335i with their G37??? Review after review shows that the G37 is less refined and fuel efficient. It just has me wondering. Could it be that they have totally different design teams that don't communicate with each other????

I'm may be biased as an owner, but to me the e90/92 335i is the best price-performance real world car in the world. Add Dinan flash and you are at 380HP/400+TQ and still get ~23mpg mixed. Even stock it beats an RS4 around a race track. With a very well equipped e90 ED price of $43K including $1K for your trip and $2K for the flash, you really can't go wrong.

Wow, some of these replys are all over the place. I guess the answer people are giving is dependent on what they were planning on using the GTR for. A toy/weekend car or daily driver will make a big difference in what the alternative is.
Adding to my list, I'd also probably look at a Z06 or new gen viper!

yes, i agree with the above. i was thinking practical overlap from the beginning . but the more i thought about the gt-r, the less i cared about my poor passengers, and the more i thought of it as a present to myself.
and nothing else this side of 120k does it for me. i could go used, and build up an rx7 or the like, but realistically i really am too busy for that kind of project.
so after much deliberating, i am still holding out for the gt-r and if i can't get one for reasonable amount i can use the money to retire early. $80k could buy me 4 or 5 years on a tropical island in the banda sea. i can dream about what might have been while i snorkle and lie on my back under a palm tree with the sound of the surf and a view of mt rinjani and my half naked gf.

The replacements for the GTR would and should be all over the board. This is a car that offers supercar performance and daily-driver practicality. I own a Jeep Grand Cherokee for winter driving in Denver and carrying capacity, Infinity G35 for daily driver and a Lotus Elise for weekends on mountain roads. I was looking for the GTR to replace both the G35 and the Elise. No other car out there now can do that.

If the GTR is get an either crazy mark up or my financial doesn't go the way I wanted, I would probably forget about getting a sport car as a replacement. I would just go more practical and buy myself a new Honda Accord. Even though I have an 03 Accord, I just like these super duper reliable accords. I always wanted an expensive sport car like the GTR that can be looked as a well rounded everyday supercar. Although the new M3 or the older E46 could have potential too, but I simply want a japanese car. So I will sacrifice getting a GTR for another Accord if things don't go the way I want it to. I'll just get the accord for an extra car just incase my 03 have problems, and just wait to see if I can afford a GTR later.

I'd still wait for the GTR but for aurguments sake I'd say either I'd look first for an R34 GTR (there are still some out there in this region of the world) second I'd try to get a Lotus Exsige (very hard to do arund here ) and if all those fail I'll get the new M3 :P or a Lumina Cr8 (what you guys in the UK call the Vauxhall VXR8 or what you call in the states the Pontiac G8 GT )

Keep my 335i, add the Dinan flash, get an LSD (like all the other 335 owners want to do!). If a dealer is willing to let me order at MSRP then I get a GT-R, if they add markup, I enjoy my existing ride. No loss for me either way. The 335 is pure joy in every regard. The GT-R just ups the pleasure with AWD and HDD navi and sound system.
