tekknikal
hmmm...is it me or is there no rear plate and plastic in the interior...?

Geez....we can't even order cars and they're already wreckin' them!!!! banghead.gif

I'm assuming this car was crashed by the usual more money than brains kids in Hong Kong.
Neoseven
Looking at the area he was in, I don't get it. Certainly doesn't look like an area to be driving fast. Maybe GT-R was just faster than he realized.

Quick note to self: Be very careful with throttle application on the new GT-R until you are well rehearsed with how GT-R will respond to said throttle application.
Arch5
Sad...but...at least it looks like the crumple zones are working well. That new "pedestrian pop-up hood" is doing it's part too. smile.gif

Wonder where the headlights are? Did they just launch out of the front of the car?

I think the "plastic" is a bunch of popped airbags - the crash was clearly severe enough to set them off. As for the plate; perhaps this gets immediately removed after a crash in some places...

Indeed, and this was for sure not a 20 mph crash.

I like the look of the pop-up hood 'pedestrian' system... looks like it's working alright!! those hinges must fire their charge pretty hard!

That doesn't look too bad. He'll need a new nose...wonder if there was any damage to the engine. From what it looks like, probably not.

I hope that the car wasn't crashed by some delivery/importer guy.
ihatepotholes
do they know how to fix it yet? lol
PHoliday
That'll buff right out.

(someone had to say it)
Modrocket_Stereo
This was inevitable. Looking at the environment I would say the crash was probably a biproduct of the driver getting into a fender bender rather than trying to get silly see what the limits are.
bsteimel
Relax, all right? My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools. I can fix it.
gtb75
Honestly, I'm surprised it took this long... These cars have been on the street in Japan for what, a month already? This is what happens when you drop a car with supercar performance in to the hands of a driver with no formal (with an instructor) high performance driving training... That means something like a Skip Barber class or HPDE with a group like NASA. If memory serves me correctly, something like 30% of the C6 Z06's sold in the first year were wrecked - same issue... That number came from a moderator at Corvette Forum, so I'm guessing it's right.

Money can buy cars, money can buy horsepower, but money can't buy experience banghead.gif

What's sadder than the fact that someone with more money than sense has already wrecked their brand new GTR?

That the same person will have a replacement for his/her totalled GTR before the first ones arrive in the US.
zakira
I hope the insurance companies here don't catch this, won't be good for us.

But the driver must've turned the VDC off.
emajnthis
doesn't even look like he was driving recklessly, just wasn't paying attention and rear ended someone, though i could of course be wrong; just judging by the damage and how directly it hit the front along with how the car looks as if the front end was pulled down at an angle, he probably ran into the back of something higher profile like a truck or SUV.
Arch5
If you look at the upper pic...you can see that he ran into the railing and off the road. It appears he was taking the turn waaaaaaay too fast (skid marks show right before the railing.

Ouch!!

I found one more picture, which I believe was taken directly before the crash.

gtb75
Not sure - it looks like the driver's side (passenger side in the USA) took more of the hit, but not by much... Also notice there's a skid mark on the pavement near the driver's front tire which leads off the road surface and, presumably, to some type of retaining wall or barrier. My guess - the driver lost control, tired (unsuccessfully) to save it, saw the accident coming, and then tried to avoid the impact at the last moment.

As far as stability systems go (VDC, etc.), they can try to keep you out of trouble, but they can't reinvent the laws of physics... I almost don't like these systems because they give drivers a false sense of security (and maybe even a sense of invincibility) that the car will save them regardless of the situation. If a car is completely out of control and doesn't have any traction to begin with, there's really not much stability control can do to recover from the situation.
juzef
Ok.. I'm a bit dissappointed that no one has inquired as to how the driver fared.

Is the driver OK? I mean, WGAFATFC => Who Give's a F About The F Car! It's only a car.

Also, I wonder how safe the car is during these types of crashes. That car looks like toast,
and given that it looks like an urban setting, how fast could the guy have been going?

I'd appreciate information if someone knows.

Thanks,

Joseph

Spicoli from Fast Times.

That's just what I was thinking as I read this thread.
You beat me to it.

It's a delicate balance experienced when we see a car we want/have get totalled.
My feelings at VIR or Summit after seeing a car totalled were always, 'Man, glad you are ok. That's so sad to see your car like that. Oh, by the way, can I take some parts off your hands.' smile.gif

MAX BOOST
"Maybe I was wrong to ever let you down
But I did what I did before boost came to town"
GTRV35
As much as I love the GT-R, I'm more concerned for the driver. hope he's okay
gtb75
I'd guess the driver fared pretty well... The passenger compartment doesn't appear to be compromised because the panel gap on the trailing edge of the driver's door (by the handle) seems to be uniform. I wonder if that's the driver/owner on the passenger side of the vehicle in those photos nixweiss.gif

The car, on the other hand, is going to be even more screwed than those pictures show. In case nobody noticed, the tow truck is only towing the crashed GT-R by the front wheels... Anybody with an AWD car knows it needs to be towed on a flatbed - otherwise the car ends up with serious driveline damage!
Sonzilla
Oh well, not surprised at all. For whatever reason the driver flew off the road. I rather not jump to any conclusions to the reason for the crash so I hope we can get an explanation soon.
chinko
Already? This car is in Hong Kong. With their import taxes on cars the GTR is like 100K+ over there. Totally sad.

Latest I heard from HK is that the guy had already "bought" the car but it hadn't been registered yet. He was out on "trade plates" when he wrecked it.

A little bondo and it will be good as new

It was inevitable that a GT-R would be totaled nearly as soon as it was driven off the lot. There will be more and more of these very soon.

The salvage parts business has already begun. I want more info on the insurance claim for the accident. That will be entertaining.

I agree, that is the information I want most from this!! Bring on the claim sheet!!!
masssrt
that's rough

I don't think ownership hasn't even taken place yet because there are no license plates on the vehicle. Unlike in US where you buy a car and wait for the plates in the mail. In Hong Kong, I think you have to wait for the registration/license plates to be complete before you can take the car out on public roads.
zakira
I heard that in Hong Kong, most GT-Rs are driven by mobsters.

The importers in Hong Kong are actually charging 140K+ for the Premium edition. The crashed one we've seen here cost over 160K because extra premium was required in order to get the car off the original owner in Japan.

No GTR has yet been registered in Hong Kong and I'm sure this particular car is still uder the ownership of one of the three major importers.

As for the driver, I believe and hope he/she (probably staff of the importer; only guess but I think any prospective buyers who could also be test driving the car would be really cautious being first time driving the car) is fine because one just couldn't go really fast in that part of that residential estate area.

Driver's skill/experience aside, another contributing reason for the accident might be that the GTR is simply too easy to go too fast for some drivers. In fact, the car salesman (with very limited driving skill by my observation) who drove me a demo GTR for the test drive last Sunday went flat out in the first two gears everywhere not having to pay much attention to the huge engine power available. The GTR is just so stable and controllable that as if anyone with a driving licence can jump right in and go fast. It almost like the car encourages the driver to go for it but unfortunately some drivers apparently forget the car goes from 0-60 in 3.3 secs.

Several known accidents occured earlier in Japan last month but not get posted on the web.
InJapan
To think that this is a car that the automotive press says is easy to drive fast... I wonder if the driver of the GT-R would have made it out of the parking lot an older 911.
Z_ro
Stupid people with money who think that they can drive like Michael Schumacher. I dont want to offend anyone but still, I bet he was trying to showoff or see how fast he can go and boom he f-ed up and thats what happens. No one forced that person to go fast its all his damn fault. Feel bad for the GTR, not the person.

I guess it really isn't the supercar for "anyone, anywhere". Seems as though dumbasses leaving delearships are excluded from that slogan.
Z_ro
From what im hearing from all the automotive magazines, the GTR is a much easier supercar to live with everyday like a daily driver. Its, im guessing, easier to drive to work or the store than say a Ferrari f430 or a Lamborghini. I think thats what it means when they say "Anyone, Anywhere". Though like any car you HAVE to drive it with brains and not like a idiot.

God thats depressing....lets keep an eye on Ebay fellas....
