We had a little fun today tuning the new turbo kit from SSP using the Cobb access port....93 octane Pump gas was able to create 618whp with a rock solid 18psi of boost.... at this power level there is no sign of shifting problems....the car drives and behaves like stock other than the HUGE rush of top end power afforded by the larger twin ball bearing turbos....race gas tuning to follow....heres a video from todays session:

Nice work as always Jack cheers.gif

Cant wait to get my car there, it should be done by the end of the week. Cant wait for jack to get his hands on the car.

behavin like stock means no turbo lag like stock?

there is some noticeable lag...as expected with larger turbos....but behaves like stock as in no transmission issues/misshifting/hunting/slipping/jerking..etc...drives very smooth and predictable....

would explain "some noticeable lag" in detail? thanks in advance.
celsius
an example would be:

OEM target boost @ ~2500 rpm
SSP (GTR1000RR) target boost @ ~3500 rpm

wow the car really pulls....when can we expect to see the track numbers

Can't wait to see some E85 or Race Gas #'s!

I think 80% of people that are worried about lag these days has never even experienced turbo lag....

Yup.. probably a similar turbo setup as mine. Not sure what catridges they are using, but im hitting full boost right in that 3500-3700 window. The top end makes up for it tho smile.gif And when really playing around the lag is very short lived in first gear. After that with the shifts you never lose it.

exactly....full boost comes on in a more linear fashion during first gear rather than immediately on the onset of load.....track times will show the whole story.

Yup.. Very linear.. Which for me i think will be much more predictable on the track. The stock ones slapped on soo hard my tires in the low gears during turning would burn up fast. I am working on getting to a track my self, just waiting for a rental day where they wont throw me off for no cage. so i can do 3 or 4 passes.

some have some haven't no big deal. Everyone's opinion on it is different. My evo didn't hit full boost until 4800 rpm but it revved to 9k, after that you'd think my opinion of the GTR would be it has zero lag, wrong. it has lag just not nearly as much
BoostCrzy
....some race gas tuning done today....the car is making 678awhp@22psi.......and SHIFTING!!!.....heres a vid taken from the tuning session to show the shifting behavior at this power level. upgraded clutches are audibly taxed in this video....

The car sounds fantastic but holy LAGGGGG batman! The car is dead under 4600.
thistle
Interesting sound on the video of one of the gear changes. It sounds like it changes gear and the revs hold at the drop in point before increasing again? Any evidence of the throttles closing at that point?

....none..... the clutches are most likely the reason the rpm "hangs"....rpm did not fall quite to the normal "drop-in" point....just a little slip.....it was evident in the 3-4 shift as well....just less noticeable.....

...we hope to get to the track tonight for a test run. weather permitting.....its raining at the moment.. :(

-Jack
thistle
Makes sense it didn't drop fully and then the clutch caught up. I'm working hard on the TCM code to help these things of course, but it is huge.
baileyrx
i imagine the dyno doesn't duplicate the actual load a car sees on the road; ie: full weight load, wind resistance, etc...

would this make a diference in shifting or no shifting problems?

meaning, how the car sensors may measure whatever values it measures, and allow/deny shifting...?

just thinking out loud about the shift lock problems
thistle
Happens on road and dyno, but there are differences as you point out between tarmac and dyno, perhaps more on R35 with its VDC, highly integrated comms between modules and fault codes for everything imaginable.

exactly.....I know you are working hard on this Thistle!!....

......track is rained out for the evening...so no more data tonight.

Was this on a C16 mix?

Great #'s!! Loving the almost flat torque curve!

Anyone know what CHRA's does SSP use on these turbos?

is this modified turbo or new turbo/header deal?

Nice results
celsius
WOW...power never drops off, even @ redline. Looks like if the torque stays below ~600, shifting will not be an issue. But it's AWESOME that Thistle, JOEGR & others are working on the fix. Impressive #'s on the mustang cheers.gif

This is "new turbo & manifold" deal.....and this was a 2/3 93 octane pumpgas 1/3 c16 mix.....

New numbers today with a little better air!...not huge but better! 682awhp @ 22psi.... this looks to be about the limit using the current fuel configuration.

BoostCrzy
Update: added 2.5 more gallons of c16 and let it cool off a bit..... 703awhp @ 22psi

Jack, that thing is a Beast! irock.gif That top end is crazy. Let me know when that car is going to hit the track and I will try to make it.

WOW...I need to change my shorts now!

Nice numbers and amazing power curve, it has not even peaked or dropped off at that limit yet.

What clutches are you using on that beast now, just the stockers or...?
BoostCrzy
Thanks guys....SSP and ourselves are really pleased so far with how this setup is coming out....we are collecting a HUGE amount of data and experience that will be sure to improve the overall experience of the GTR as a whole and bring us one step closer to realizing the true potential hidden within the beast!

215 lb-ft @ 3000rpm? 300 lb-ft @ 4000 rpm?

It doesn't even get close to 500 lb-ft until about 5000 rpm. Even the SPE Greddy package makes over 500 lb-ft @ 3,500 rpm.

Looks similar to the Boost Logic torque curve.

Maybe for drag racing or 1-Mile runs, this is OK.

However, for road racing or canyon carving duty, I'd want to see the meat of the torque begin further down the powerband.

By comparison, the SPE 750 setup makes 400 ft-lb @ 2500 rpm, 480 lb-ft @ 3000 rpm, and 600 lb-ft @ 3500 rpm.

Just sayin'.....

Iirc ssp will have different turbo options for this setup. This is just one of them.
SSP Kris
The beauty of the this package is that you can run multiple different turbo configurations. The turbos are held in by V-BANDS, and can be swapped out in only a few hours. You have the ability to run a much smaller turbo for road racing, and then convert back to a meaty turbo for straight line racing. Precison Turbo will even go as far as making custom turbos for almost any application.
